“How can you be an artist and not reflect the times?” Nina Simone
Why every artist need to stand up for Julian Assange and fight with the weapon of art!
When I go into my studio and start to paint, every brushstroke is driven by my emotions, its driven by what affected me what I saw, in the world.
It becomes an ultimative part of my creative process, I can not shake this off, its in my bloodstream.
These days this is often a very painful process, its almost like fighting in the mud all the time.
But, the essence of a true artist soul, is to be highly emotionally attached, to the world you are living in.
There is no escape, and there should not be one. If you call yourself a true artist, this is what you have to do. You will get bullshit for this from people who do not like what you do, but well this a the burden an artist have to carry.
Henry Matisse, once said, “Creativity takes courage” and I truly believe that there is no creativity without courage, and everything created without courage, is no art.
And in saying all this, as a true artist you have to be affected by what is happen to Julian Assange. You have to be emotionally effected deeply in your soul, you have to feel the pain - and what it means for all of us - if Julian is extradited to the US.
To say it with the words by Rodger Waters, if they get away with it: “we are done”
If the torture they force on Julian is not effecting you, emotionally and creativity.
If it does not effect your creative process, if you are not able to transfer what they are doing to him into your art, in order to call out awareness, then you should start to ask some serious questions about yourself.
Julian is the greatest human being of our time, he never sold a single bit of his soul, to take advantage for himself. He was prepared to take every risk, to set us free with the truth. He showed us what courage really means.
He is fighting for all of us, and he deserves every brushstroke you paint, every song you create, every dance move you do, every sculpture you form , every word you write to be a calling for his freedom.
Julian and what they do to him is the reflection of our time, so if you want to call yourself a true artist, you have to create the mirror everybody looking at, and have to have the courage and willingness, to fight for him. If we do not fight we will end up at a place of NO RETURN - its about our all freedom, our freedom of speech, we the artist need to unite now, and form an Armee of art to set him free.
So I call out every artist - to show courage, and fight. Art has a revolutionary power, we need to use it. We need to set Julian free, and free all of us!
